7 Tips to Lose Weight

Want to lose weight? Take a brisk walk! Cut down on sugar! Eat five servings of fruits and vegetables a day! If only it were so easy: Incorporate a few key pieces of advice and watch the pounds simply melt away. But as anyone who’s undertaken a nutrition and exercise program knows, transforming your body and improving your health takes more than a couple of guidelines. It requires willpower, and an ability to remain steadfastly on track for the long term, when the dieting grows more tedious and your workouts start to interfere with myriad other commitments.

In other words, when real life intrudes on the best-laid plans. However, there is hope. Through the power of a positive attitude and the following motivational strategies offered by the Diabetes & Nutrition Education Center at GMC, you can stay on track and accomplish your weight-loss goals.

Stopping Diabetes Before it Starts

Fifty-seven million Americans have prediabetes, making them at risk for type 2 diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association. Prediabetes is defined by blood glucose levels that are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. Most individuals develop signs and symptoms of prediabetes prior to developing type 2 diabetes. If you take action to manage your blood glucose when you have prediabetes, you can delay or prevent type 2 diabetes.

“For individuals who are at risk for prediabetes, it is important to have their blood glucose checked periodically by their physician,” says Cris Hartley, manager of diabetes and nutrition education at Gwinnett Medical Center. “Having yearly checkups, knowing your family history, maintaining a healthy diet and staying active are all ways to prevent prediabetes or, once developed, keep type 2 diabetes at bay.”

Dining Out Guide: Tips for Eating Healthy

Fast foods and eating out are a part of most of our lives because of our hectic schedules and busy lifestyles.  When visiting your favorite fast food restaurant there are healthier or better choices that are less in calories and lower in sodium and fat, which is important for our hearts and our waistlines!

Arm yourself with knowledge. Almost all of the fast food or chain restaurants have their menus online with the nutrition analysis.  Use this to make the best choices when visiting your favorite place.  Remember the beverages that you have with your meal may contribute to your overall calories, especially if you get the “super sized” option.  Most restaurants offer alternatives to fries, like a salad or fruit, this will save you calories, fat and sodium.  The fact is we are going to eat at these establishments, so we should make the healthiest choices as possible.

Watch the video below featuring GMC dietician, Amy Tella, giving us some healthy alternatives to fast food options.

Can't Sleep? Consider a Take Home Sleep Study

According to the American Academy on Sleep Medicine, more than 70 million people in the U.S. have a sleep disorder. Most of those who have one are completely unaware of it. Many of those who are aware of it never choose to seek the help that they need.

In the past, those who did seek medical treatment (which is highly recommended), were limited to one option -  a sleep study completed at a doctor's office or hospital, which meant staying over night in their facility. Even though this has its place, especially for those who are obese or present with a condition that should be monitored over night, there is no doubt that there is no place like home!

Now there's another option for patients that qualify - a take home sleep study. This new device is called Apnea Risk Evaluation System (ARES).

Treating Endometriosis

176 million women suffer from endometriosis, but few can even say the word let alone know what it is. In honor of National Endometriosis Awareness Month, GMC wants to educate you about this life-changing disease.

So what is endometriosis?  Endometriosis occurs when tissue normally located inside the lining of the uterus has grown outside the uterus. It can be found on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, intestines and possibly other places in the pelvic cavity. Sometimes it can even grow outside of the pelvis.

Watch this informative educational video from Endometriosis Research Center to learn more about this disease. The first step is education, then speak to a physician about treatment options.

What You Should Know About Colon Cancer

According to the American Cancer Society, during the past few decades more people have been surviving colon cancer, and fewer people have been dying from it. This is due to improvements in colon cancer screening and treatment. Screening can find growths called polyps so they can be removed before they turn into cancer. And screening can find the disease earlier, when it’s likely to be easier to treat. Don’t let these 5 common myths stop you from getting the lifesaving tests you need.
