Headaches: DIY Or Doc?
Dull, sharp or throbbing—we all know what headaches are. But we can’t always pinpoint what causes them – or what the best treatment is.
It’s Headache Awareness week, devoted to educating the public about the reality and severity of headache pain and encouraging sufferers to consult with a physician, as the causes can vary.
So when you have a headache, how do you know whether the cure is DIY (do-it-yourself) or call the doctor?
For the occasional headache, aspirin or Excedrin are good choices. If it’s pollen season, rinsing your nasal passages with a saline rinse or using an over-the-counter antihistamine can help, too.
But if headaches pop up two or three times a week, you’ll want to go to the doctor to find out the underlying cause. Figuring out what the triggers are is going to make you feel better, rather than just treating the symptoms.
And watch out for red flags, including what you’d describe as “the worst headache of my life.” If that’s the case, call 911. That’s often a symptom of aneurysm , which can be fatal.
